‘Anchor text’ refers to the clickable word/s that has been used to link one page on your website to another webpage - often referred to as a hyperlink (although that is slightly different).

Anchor text should state or describe the end point of the link, but it doesn’t always have to be an exact match. Indeed consistent use of the same anchor text can be flagged by Google as spammy.
The different types of anchor text
There are a few different types of anchor text, they include...
‘Exact Match’ anchor text
Where the anchor text is the exact keyword or keyphrase that we want to rank for.
‘Phrase Match’ anchor text
Where the anchor text contains the keyword or keyphrase that we want to rank for.
‘Partial Match’ anchor text
Where the anchor text has all the components of the keyword or phrase but in a different combination.
‘Branded’ anchor text
Where the anchor text is the name of your brand.
‘Naked URL’ anchor text
Where the anchor text is the URL as it would be seen in the browser.
‘Random’ anchor text
Where the anchor text is a random phrase that does not feature any of the keywords or phrases that we want to rank for.
‘Image link’ anchor text
Where the anchor text is the alt text of the image.
