You may have heard by now that Facebook’s parent company is renaming itself to ‘Meta’.
They claim it’s to bring all of the various companies and organisations that have fallen under the ‘Facebook’ umbrella together under a unified name. After all, Facebook has not just been Facebook for a while now – they own multiple tech firms and apps including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Oculus VR.
There are some huge plans for ‘Meta’ over the coming years, Zuckerburg has announced that he wants to transition from being a primary social media company to being a ‘Metaverse’ company.
But what does ‘Metaverse’ mean?
Metaverse in its simplest translation is all about virtual reality. It's about being able to work virtually, shop virtually, see friends virtually, experience shows and events virtually, and much more.
The aim of the metaverse is to be able to reach a billion people, host digital commerce, and create virtual jobs.
You could consider lockdown to have been just a taste of what it would be like to live in a metaverse on an ongoing basis.
How the metaverse gets created and implemented is not fully mapped out, all we can do is wait and see.
